You know the drill: a dozen single ladies all gather around the bride, eagerly waiting for the moment when the floral arrangement goes flying through the air. Stars twinkle and dance in their eyes as they imagine catching the bouquet, ready for a sign that they will be the next woman in a white dress. When the moment comes, the crowd becomes a sea of elbows and grasping fingers. One girl emerges from the fray, triumphant, while she is stared down by envious gazes.
It’s always the same. And while traditions can be fun, so can changing things up a bit and starting new traditions. So I thought I would share some other fun ideas for tossing the bouquet.
- Rather that tossing the bride’s bouquet, have a special bouquet made called a break-away bouquet. Some florists know how to do this (and even if they’ve never done it before, it’s easy enough to explain.) Each flower in the bouquet has a tiny silver or gold charm tied to it, and when the bouquet is thrown, it breaks apart so that each lady receives her own flower and unique charm. You can have little papers with each charm printed on the front and a description or “fortune” so to speak inside, that they can collect after they have caught their flower. This makes the whole experience fun and special for everyone, and each girl will have a charm to take home with her. You will want to make sure that you include enough flowers for everyone though – and maybe even have a few extras, just in case.
- Instead of giving it to a single lady, present the bouquet to the couple who has been together the longest. This is great if a lot of your friends are married or if you are renewing your vows. You can even have a dance where all of the couples start out, but are slowly eliminated – starting with those who have been married more recently. The last couple on the dance floor who has been together the longest is presented with the bouquet.
